Short Artist Statement
As one whose passions and emotions inform her art, Deborah Birkeland seeks to capture the beautiful landscapes on the North Shore of Lake Superior through expressionistic watercolor and acrylic paints.
Extended Artist Statement
Lake Superior has been my heart home for over 50 years, and since my retirement, my permanent home. My art seeks to capture the rhythmic movement of crashing waves or mirrored waters; the beckoning cliffs and palisades that long to be climbed; deep and dark skies overwhelmed with stars; light filled clouds that dance over my head; rippling rivers, singing and clapping a song of hope; thundering waterfalls that remind us that life is always moving ahead; and the iconic North Shore landscapes that bring breathtaking beauty and joy to every season on Lake Superior. I approach both watercolor and acrylic painting with an intuitive and creative energy, entering into the emotion, light, and depth of wonder all around me. My goal as an artist is to share my artistic creations with those who are who are drawn in and given sight to the beauty God so graciously shares with us. That is why I paint, and why as long as I have the gift of seasons of life, they will be endless seasons of joy!
