I am a fiber artist with a passion for recreating wilderness and nature scenes using needle felting.

Extended Artist Statement

Kris is a needle felting fiber artist and wilderness enthusiast inspired to capture and represent the beauty of the natural world. She focuses on Northern Minnesota landscapes and themes of sunsets, weather, night skies, water, and trees. Kris incorporates a variety of natural and synthetic fibers, and much of her work utilizes fine merino wool. She loves working with wool and its unique properties as a naturally sourced material. She finds felting with wool can stimulate deep emotions and contemplation through tactile meditation when working with wool and observing the finished art. She is continually learning about wool’s role in a worldwide movement toward more ethical and sustainable agriculture practices.

Needle felting uses specialized barbed needles to push fibers together, causing their scales to tangle and interlock into a matted material known as felt. Needle felted landscape art, which Kris has named “Feltscaping,” is essentially painting with layers of colored fiber. She mainly uses single, fine-gauge needles and many layers of blended colored fibers to create heavily felted, detailed feltscapes. Kris strives for realism and is always seeking new ways to employ fiber types, textures, colors, needles, and methods to draw viewers into a scene before they realize it’s not a photograph or traditional painting.

Kris gravitated to fiber, color, and nature at a young age. She has a BA in Social Environmental Studies, where she studied the impacts of people, technology, and cultural systems on the natural world. In addition to her fiber art, she typically has several knitting projects underway, is learning to spin yarn and tan fur hides, dabbles in handmade felt and feather decorations, and enjoys playing piano, all while providing independent strategic and operational consulting services to software startup companies. She lives on the Gunflint Trail and enjoys the surrounding abundance of nature with her husband and beloved Labrador Retrievers. You can view her complete art portfolio at www.Feltscaping.com.
